Title: The Ugly Duckling

Author: Emily L. from Exeter, New Hampshire

Her story: She rewrote a modern interpretation to the classic children’s fairytale, the Ugly Duckling. Instead of the traditional travails of the being left alone in the pond and made fun of by the local hens, Emily’s version had the ugly duckling bullied by his peers at school and not getting chosen by his teacher for a school musical–all obstacles with which modern children can relate.

Illustria’s work: Emily told us she wanted a modern look to accompany her modern take on the Ugly Duckling, so we paired her up with Jude, one of our artists who specializes in a clean, digital style that is also colorful and kid-friendly. It was a perfect fit!

Titles: Noah’s Ark, Adam and Eve, David and Goliath, Daniel and the Lions, Birth of Jesus, Joseph’s Coat of Many Colors, Jonah and the Big Fish, Moses, Esther, Good Samaritan, Samson & Delilah

Client: Audacese, Inc.

Their story: Audacese is a digital children’s book publisher. They were interested in developing a set of interactive children’s Bible stories for the iPad. Their writers had finished all of the manuscripts, but needed to find the right illustrators, animators, composers, and programmers to make their vision a reality.

Illustria’s work: We worked with Audacese to come up with a detailed design plan for each of their apps. We listened to their vision of a modern version of children’s Bible stories, and sourced a team of four illustrators to fit their requested style. Our composers created a soundtrack suitable to the mood of each book. Our programmers coded every animation by hand, perfectly timed to every sound effect, totaling to an average of three animations per page. They also added fun games, quizzes, lessons, and surprise bonus materials in each app. We developed eleven apps in seven months. They were showcased at a Christian conference at the beginning of the year, to standout reviews. Kids simply didn’t want to put the apps down!

Title: The Story of the Zodiac

Author: David L. from West Windsor, New Jersey

His story: David wanted to bring some of China’s favorite fairytales to a wider audience. He had finished his manuscript of the Chinese story, Story of the Zodiac, which describes how the Chinese zodiac comes to be, and why cats are not friends with rats. He needed an illustrator to bring his story to life and make it appeal to children.

Illustria’s work: We paired David with Jude, who specializes in a clean, modern style that still remains fantastical. Before starting his first sketches, Jude researched traditional Chinese design motifs that could be integrated in the character, scene, and layout design. This would ensure authenticity along with modernity. Jude illustrated 36 beautiful pages. Story of the Zodiac will soon be distributed as an iPad app and downloadable eBook, making Chinese culture more available to children worldwide.
